Rhapsody of The Bronze Sparrow Terrace

Rhapsody of The Bronze Sparrow Terrace
By: Cao Zhi曹植
After Qing Ming I went out to have some fun, and I decided to ascend the many steps to entertain my soul.
I saw the great halls of the government opened, and watched the works of the benevolent and wise ruler.
The gates were built high into the heavens, and the two auxiliary towers seemed to float in the sky.
A terrace rises in the middle with grandeur, connected to the pagodas over the west of the city.
Near the long-flowing Zhang River, I saw the fruits in the gardens's nourishment.
Raise two terrace to the left and right, we have the Jade Dragon and Golden Phoenix.
I saw the two bridges that connect them east and west, arching over heaven itself. (Note 1)
I looked down to see the majesty of the Imperial Capital, and looked up to see the clouds and mist float.
I welcomed talented people gathering left and right, so they could help me accomplish my Grand Dream(Note 2)
I raised my head to feel the spring breeze, and heard the flocks of birds sing.
These walls in Heaven have now stood, thus pronouncing my family's ambition.
Spreading benevolence to all under heaven, so they would all tribute back to me in the capital.
Only the Duke Huan of Qi and Duke Wen of Jin's state had such splendor (Note 3), but I am not satisfied with just their brilliance.
Their brilliance ended! How Beautiful! Spread our kindness to the ends of the earth!
Come everyone and assist us in our Imperial quest, and not scatter to the four directions to aid others!
We will share the entire world together, and our brilliance will match the Sun and the Moon!
Let us always be the noble rulers, and let our longevity match the East Emperor! (Note 4)
Fly our Dragon banners and wander the world, and circle the city in our royal carriage!
Our benevolence will reach all in the land, and they will all live long and prosper.
Let this terrace stand forever, and let us revel in happiness always!

Note 1: In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, this phrase was modified to "Snatch the Two Qiao beauties of the Southeast, for my happiness day and night." Since the elder Qiao was Zhou Yu's ruler and friend Sun Jian's Wife and the younger Qiao was Zhou Yu's wife, this greatly incensed Zhou Yu to fight with Cao Cao rather than surrender. This worked because the Qiao of the name 喬 could be used in lieu for the character "Bridge" 橋 at that time.
Note 2: The first King of Zhou dreamed of being visited by a flying bear, and that was the omen of him becoming ruler of all of China.
Note 3: Both dukes were hegemons during the Spring and Autumn period, and lived with great prosperity over an empire of alliances.
Note 4: The East Emperor is known for his longevity.

Rhapsody on Dengtuzi's Lechery

Rhapsody on Dengtuzi's Lechery
By: Song Yu
Sir Dengtuzi is an attendant of the King of Chu.
One day he badmouthed Song Yu to the King,
"Song Yu has extremely good looks, 玉為人 體貌閑麗
he is extremely manipulative, and he is extremely lecherous.
This kind of man is not something your majesty should allow into your palaces where your women reside."
The King demanded a rebuttal from Song Yu.
Song Yu said,玉曰
"Looks is a gift from heaven,體貌閑麗 所受於天也
speechcraft is a gift from my teachers.
As for lechery, that is not my quality."
The King said, 王曰
"Defend your claim about lechery,子不好色 亦有說乎?
If you can, then you can stay. If you can't, then you must leave."
Song Yu then said, 玉曰
"The truly matchless women in China are all in our state of Chu.
The truly matchless women in Chu are all from my hometown.
the truly matchless beauties of my hometown are all no match for the daughter of my east neighbor.
How perfect is she? If you add a bit of height she'd be too tall.
If you take away a bit of height she'd be too short.
If you powder her skin she'd be too pale, if you put rouge on her she'd be too red.
Her eyebrows are as lovely as the feathers of a bird, her skin is as white as the snow.
Her form is lithe as though it has been wrapped in silk, her teeth are as perfect as seashells.
With one smile she would daze all of Yangcheng and charm all of Xiacai.
However, such a perfect beauty has been eying me from her walls for three years, 然此女登牆闚臣三年
but I have yet to agree to her entreaty.
Dentuzi, on the other hand, has a wife as ugly as sin itself.
Her hair is like a crow's nest and dirt covers her face. Her ears are shriveled, her lips flip outwards, and she has jagged teeth.
Her back is crooked and her waist is deformed. She walks with a limp and she's infested with warts and hemorrhoids.
Even though she's this bad, Dengtuzi would still hit it and had five children with her.
Your majesty, who, then, is more lecherous?"
At that time, Sir Zhanghua of Qin was visiting Chu.
Zhanghua immediately said to the King,
"Here we have Song Yu lavishing praises on his neighbor, and says that she is of utmost beauty, that's just utterly misguided.
Even though for following the ancient customs and conscience, I feel that I am not as adequate as he is,臣自以為守德 謂不如彼矣
still I feel that of the random women in remote places of Chu like the neighbor's daughter,且夫南楚窮巷之妾
it is not worthy of mention in the King's presence.
If, however, I indeed have no taste, then I will not speak anymore."
The King said,王曰
"Try then."
Zhanghua said,大夫曰
"Yes, my liege. "
"When I was young I loved to travel.
I went through all nine prefectures and passed every city of worth.
After I left Xianyang, I went to Handan.
I stayed at the banks of the Zhen and the Wei rivers, between the states of Zheng and Wei.
At that time it was near the end of spring, with the bright sun of summer looming by.
The birds all chirped, and the beauties all picked mulberries in the field.
They were rare beauties, and their radiance shone all over此郊之姝 華色含光
Their beauty is self-evident, not needing any further decoration.
"The way I saw them was just as the Classic of Poetry says,臣觀其麗者 因稱詩曰
'Walk that wide path, holding my beloved's hand.'
It would be best to dedicate this to them.
However, while they seemed to wish to come, they didn't,
Even if they seemed like they had came, I couldn't see them.
Spiritually close yet physically far away, everything about her was different.
With loning hidden in smiles, we stole glances at each other.
"She invoked the Classic of Poetry as well,復稱詩曰
'Everything revived under the spring breeze, and its lushness covered the earth
With a solemnness I received your graceful dedication,
but a gift like this is worse than death.'"
"She did not accept, and withdrew with her grace.
It is probably because I never found the correct line, but instead relied on my spirit for victory.
With desire in my eyes, but propriety in my heart in the manners of the ancients,
Reciting the wisdom of the ancient odes to remember the rites, the key of not overstepping its bounds
makes this worth speaking of."
The King approved of his words.
And thus, Song Yu did not need to leave the court.

Rhapsody of the Goddess Luo

Rhapsody of the Goddess Luo
By: Cao Zhi曹植

In the 3rd year of the Huang Chu Era, I entered the capital to visit the Emperor, when I returned I had to cross the Luo River. Legend said the Goddess of the Luo River was named Princess Fu. Song Yu once wrote a rhapsody as a record of a story of the King of Chu meeting a goddess, so I imitated him and recorded the story in this song, and it said:黃初三年 余朝京師 還濟洛川 古人有言 斯水之神 名曰宓妃 感宋玉對楚王神女之事 遂作斯賦 其辭曰

I returned from the capital and headed to my fief.
I passed through the Yique Mountain, Huanyuan Mountain, the Tong Pass, and finally arrived at the summit of the Jing Mountain.
At this time the sun was already setting, and my chariot and horse were tired.
I dismounted and set my horse free to graze on the sweet-smiling grass. I walked casually in the forest, to enjoy the view.
Suddenly my heart was shaken, and my thoughts went far away. I raised my head and saw a mirage: a woman so beautiful that she was comparable to a goddess, and she stood next to the cliffs.
I asked my servant,
"Have you seen that woman, who is she? Why, she is so beautiful."

My servant replied,

"I have heard the Luo River's Goddess is named Princess Fu, could my lord have possibly seen her? What does she look like? I wish to know."

I told him:余告之曰

"She was,其形也
As dainty as a started swan goose, and her body was as fine as a wandering dragon.
Her beauty was as radiant as the autumn chrysanthemum, and her youthfulness was as lush as the sky-reaching pines.
Her actions were subtle, like the thin clouds covering the moon, and her flightiness was like snowflakes blown by a breeze.
Looking from afar, her purity was as brilliant as the rising sun.
Looking up close, her radiance was like a lotus rising from a pond.
Her form was perfect, and her shape was fit.
Her shoulders were like a masterful sculpture, and her waist was as thin as a white silk band.
Her neck and her jaw were perfect, and her pale skin could be vaguely seen through her dress.
Her fragrance radiated to all four directions, without need of perfume.
Her hair rose like the towering clouds, and her brows curve like the willow leaves.
Her teeth shone pearl-white, within her scarlet lips.
Her eyes gazed deep into my soul, and the corners of her mouth curled slightly when she smiled.
Her stature was beautiful beyond belief, and her conduct had a regal elegance.
Her demeanor was calm and soft, and her words were sweet and alluring.
Her cloths were mystical and rare, and her frame was picturesque.
Her radiant top was made from the finest mystic silk, and her shiny earrings were made from the finest jade.
Her hairpiece as made from the finest gold, and the decorating pearls complemented her beauty.
She walked with her ornate shoes, dragging her mist-like skirt behind her.
Orchid fragrance emanated from her dress, and she wandered aimlessly on the mountain path."

Sometimes she leaped playfully, as though she was wandering the path of clouds.
A colorful flag lay to her left, a cassia branch to her right.
She pulled up her sleeve to reach her pale arm into the Luo River, to pick the black lingzhi growing in the rushing waves.
I fell in love with her demeanor and beauty, and it made me shaken and depressed.
I didn't have a good matchmaker to relay to her my feelings, I could only try to pass it with my fleeting glance.
I wished my true feelings could reach her before others do, so I took off my jade pendant to present to her as a gift.
But ah, she was too perfect, she knew the ancient rites and songs.
She raised the pendant and answered me, telling me the date we would meet here in the pond.
I was filled with thoughts of true love, but I was also afraid she may have lied.
I remembered the remnant words of Zheng Jiaofu (Note 1) who also had such an encounter, and was mired in dilemma and doubt.
So I held back the happiness of acceptance, and told myself I should conduct myself according to the ancient customs.

Thus she was moved, and she wandered around.
The divine light around her separated, and suddenly began to flicker
She stood up tall like a crane, as though she was about to fly away, but she stayed.
She walked on the fragrant orchid path, and stepped on the grass, letting the fragrance permeate.
She sorrowfully cried of longing, it was sharp and long.
After a while, her fellow gods came after the sound, and came to accompany her.
Some played in the stream, some flew into the shallows.
Some picked pearls in the bottom of the river, some collected beautiful feathers fallen on the bank.
She was followed by the princesses of the Xiang River (Note 2), and was accompanied by the swimming girls in the Han River(Note 3).
They decried the Paogua's (Note 4) singleness, and the cowherd's (Note 5) loneliness.
She raised her arm to let her sleeves cover the sun, and gazed afar with her dress fluttering in the wind.
Her movements were as light as a flying bird, floating divinely without mortal peer.
She walked on the surface of the water, mist forming under her dainty feet.
Her erratic movements complemented her confused expression.
It was hard to say if she would go forward or back, or if she would leave or stay.
She turned and gazed at me, her eyes passing tidings of love to my longing heart.
She looked like she had something to say, but all I could feel was her orchid breath.
Her beauty radiated all around me, making me forget where I stood.

"As the wind god put a stop to the breeze, the water god calmed the wave in the river.
As the God of the Yellow River pounded the drums, the Goddess Nüwa began to sing.
The small fish all jumped out of the water and surrounded the carriage, as the jade bells brought tidings of their departure.
The six dragons glided together, pulling the divine carriage behind them.
The great fish all acted as guard to their trip, the birds flew around to clear a path."

"Thus she passed the island in the water and the mountain in the south, turned her neck around and gazed at me with her eyes.
She opened her scarlet lips and talked slowly, telling me about the reason we have to separate.
I resented the difference between gods and mortals, and I decried the young love going unfulfilled.
She raised her sleeve to her cheeks to hide her sorrow, but her tears drenched that divine satin.
She pained that we would never be able to meet again, and hurt that we would be separated like Heaven and Earth.
She didn't have any tokens of love to give me, so she could only present me a rare jade circlet from Jiangnan.
'Even if I'm trapped in Heaven forevermore, I will think of you, my lord, always...'
She disappeared before she could finish, and with the fading of the divine light I felt an emptiness in my heart."

"Thus I climbed the mountains and crossed the valleys, searching for her divine steps.
Thinking of the way she departed, I grew more and more sorrowful.
I wished her beautiful form would reappear, so I got in a boat and rode against the waves.
Floating aimlessly on the Yangtze River, my thoughts turned to her again and again.
At night my beating heart denied me sleep, my frozen tears frosted my clothes.
Alas, I told my servant to start the carriage, for I will be returning towards the East once more.
I held the bridle and raised my whip, but, overcame with sorrow, I couldn't give the order to go."
1. Zheng Jiaofu was a Zhou Dynasty noble who was said to have met two goddesses in the Han River.
2. Some consider Lord Xiang and Lady Xiang to be poems about E Huang and Nü Ying, daughters of the ancient Emperor Yao, who both married Yao's successor Shun. After Shun's death, both women drowned themselves in the Xiang River, and was consecrated as goddesses.
3. This is a reference to the Classic of Poetry Poem "Wide Han River", with the connection to Zheng Jiaofu, which would make them demi-goddesses and thus a parallel to e Huang and Nü Ying.
4. Paogua (or Hugua) is an ambiguous star or constellation in Chinese records, the modern Hugua is half of the constellation Delphinus, but it also has been identified with Tianji, now considered a part of Saggitarius, but it was also annotated as being "East" of Aquila. It was often written in parallel with Vega or Altair (never both) of Qixi, as a metaphor for loneliness, but all sources admit that they don't know the story behind Paogua's loneliness, and that it's been written that way since ancient times.
5. The cowherd is Altair, male lead of the Qixi story.

If the water was not deep enough, it would not have enough force to lift a great ship.
If you poured a puddle of water in front of your room, you could perhaps use a stalk of grass for a ship over it;覆杯水於坳堂之上 則芥為之舟
But if you put a cup on the puddle it would surely sink and stick to the bottom, because the water would be too shallow for such a great ship.
If the wind did not condense enough, it would not be able to lift great wings.
Thus, only at ninety thousand miles high would the wind be strong enough to lift the great Peng.
